Meet our New Mascot

Students voted on August 9, 2010, the first day of school for there favorite school colors and mascot. They had the choice of the Rattlers, Sidewinders, Wolverines, and Condors. Students voted for the Wolverines and the colors blue and gold. Students, however, thought they were voting for an X-men character and not an animal. We were lucky enough to have a professional artist design this logo for us based upon the animal and the X-men character. Stay tuned for chances to buy school spirit wear featuring our new mascot.

Tips for Successful Study Time

This year at Mountain Vista Middle School, we are committed to giving all of our students the tools they need to be successful and prepared for high school. One of the most important things for a student’s success in school is to develop good listening skills. Much of the information students receive is through listening to their teachers. Listening is a cognitive act that requires students to pay attention and mentally process what they hear. Here are a few tips to help your students be good listeners in class.

  1. Be Cognitively ready to listen when you come to class:
    1. Complete all assigned work and reading
    2. Review notes from the previous day
    3. Think about what you already know about the topic
  2. Be Emotionally Ready to listen:
    1. Your attitude is important
    2. Make a conscious choice to find the topic useful and interesting
    3. Be committed to learning all you can
  3. Listen with a Purpose:
    1. Identify what you expect and hope to learn
  4. Listen with an Open Mind:
    1. Be receptive to what your teacher says
    2. Be open to other view points
  5. Be Attentive:
    1. Focus on what the teacher is saying
    2. Do not daydream
    3. Choose a seat in the front
    4. Maintain eye contact with the teacher
  6. Be an Active Listener:
    1. Take good written notes
    2. Make decisions about what to write
  7. Meet the Challenge:
    1. Don’t stop listening when things get hard—listen more carefully
    2. ASK QUESTIONS
  8. Triumph over the Environment
    1. Don’t give in to inconveniences like noise, room temperature, or lighting
    2. STAY FOCUSED
